Ingrid

Ingrid on the deskAs luck would have it, in mid-2010, Dr. McGuire's son acquired a 2 year old cat named Ingrid from one of his friends who was no long able to have a cat at his apartment. Ingrid came to stay at Dr. McGuire's office while her son transitioned between residences. During this time Ingrid learned a lot from Poncho, and was often confused for Poncho as they both look similar to each other.

When Ingrid first moved in she was a VERY timid cat. She ran when approached and was only comfortable around a few people, and even then it took her a couple minutes to warm up to them.

Ingrid and Poncho did not exactly hit it off. They kept their distance and hissed at each other. Luckily, neither cat is aggressive so the only fighting they did was with their vocal cords and even that was kept to a minimum and very rarely was it in front of patients. This rivalry was definitely the nudge Ingrid needed to become a more social and outgoing cat.

After her initial fear and dislike of Poncho, Ingrid decided she was going to do anything in her power to one-up Poncho and make him jealous. Ingrid started greeting patients at the door, cuddling them in the waiting room, and following Ingridthem into the room for their appointments. Poncho was not thrilled with this and would try to prevent Ingrid from taking over his "job" by waiting by the front door or staying in the Doctor's patient office.

Soon, Poncho decided that Ingrid was ready to become the new therapy cat at Dr. McGuire's office. Both cats could be seen in the waiting room waiting to greet patients, one cat by the door and the other back by the scale; and both cats would accompany the patients back to the room for their appointment. Neither cat would sit next to each other but they were willing to be in the same room as long as they could each have their own side of the room.

Meanwhile, Dr. McGuire's son settled into his new apartment and soon realized that having two jobs didn't leave much time for sleep much less caring for an animal, especially one that had blossomed into a social butterfly and become accustomed to being surround by people and lots of attention. He politely asked Dr. McGuire if she would be willing to keep Ingrid at the office as an un-official therapy cat. Seeing that Poncho was nearing retirement and Ingrid had already taken it upon herself to become the next therapy cat, Dr. McGuire agreed.

Poncho now spends his days at Dr. McGuire's house enjoying the quiet life of watching birds in the bay window and sunning himself on the back deck while birds and bugs fly by.

Ingrid in Guitar CaseIngrid, meanwhile, has blossomed even more. She will walk right up to you and demand love, although if you approach her she tends to still run away, old habits are hard to break. But she doesn't run very far and always comes back, this has become more of a game than anything else.

She has the mindset that what is yours is hers and can often be seen trying to get into purses and bags of unsuspecting patients. The same goes for food and pens, if you don't watch your lunch she will try to eat it and any pen left unattended on the desk becomes fair game. She has a bad habit of ripping paper, so any important documents need to be put out of her reach. She has a tendency to drool when she is extremely relaxed, so beware of wet spots if you happen to be petting her on your lap.
